WeTV Wedding Cake Wars

This is a replica of the cake I made with Jenna Garno on the WeTV show "Wedding Cake Wars" that aired September 20th. I was informed of the theme three days prior to the competition....location, location, location. Then I had three days to design, bake, figure out how to make something on the cake MOVE and to be on location in Maryland. Once there, we had 2 hours to prepare and cover our cakes, and then only 7 hours to put them together and decorate. Much fun was had!

This seven tier cake was inspired by a traditional Thai wedding. What is Thailand famous for? Thai silk, white elephants, gold, and Buddha statues.

Elephants have always played an integral part in Thai culture and Thai history. Elephants are the symbol of Thailand and are supposed to bring luck to the King and the Kingdom.
On two sides of the bottom tier, there are nine pleats to represent the nine monks that are present in a Buddhist wedding ceremony.
Four miniature Buddha statues, made with sugar paste and painted in gold were placed in our "rock garden", accompanied by scented candles.

Amongst all of the Thai customs, a wedding is still a wedding and I wanted to have a part of the cake represent that...a miniature wedding cake covered in gold sugar.  Above it, there is a close up of the Thai Silk with hand-piped designs painted in gold. Below it, we have more gold.....hand piped lace extension hearts.

รักนี้ฟ้าลิขิต or "RAK NI FA LIKIT" means "a love beyond the sky". This expression is used during a wedding between a foreigner and a Thai woman. It is like a mystery that people separated by oceans finally married together. As a foreigner married to a Thai man, it was dear to my heart to include this on the cake. Hand painted in gold.

The top tier replicates Thai Silk with hand piped lace, painted in gold, fondant accents, and trimmed in gold on the top edge.
